Champions trophy - Last few boring matches
By all accounts the champions trophy has been a damp squib. India is knocked out of the tournament the stands are empty, sponsors unhappy, cricketers disappointed and viewers bored to death. Adding to the misery is the extraa innings show with Mandira bedi and Sidhu making a mockery of the game. Poor Tony Greig, John Wright and Geoff Boycott try to salvage it but Charu can be the helpless specatator to the antics of the Sony Marketing team. Last years fourth umpire with Srikant and Amarnath was very interesting, as for now the half time show and post game analysis is reduced to Pepsi morons screaming Aya India.. Ab to Gaya India.
Neverthless here are few highlights of the last 3 matches.

Sri Lanka - Pakistan - Razzaq
It looks like Pakistan has perfected the art of cliching nail biting finishes. Amazing batting by Razzaq and Malik. For SL Malinga shouldn't be given the ball in the final overs.

Looks like the Baraboune pitch sucks with no bounce. Though the Lankans lost only 1 wicket they needed to be cautious. I guess other games too will be very low-scoring

Channel 4 : Call centre ID theft exposed
Longer detailed report
Channel 4 Call centre ID theft exposed
Hundreds of thousands of British consumers' financial details are on sale in India at £8 a time, a television documentary has found.
The practice - which is illegal in both India and the UK - was unearthed during a 12-month probe by the Dispatches programme.
Security failures at Indian call centres are allowing detailed financial data on individuals to be gathered and sold with ease to criminal networks for huge profits, the documentary found.
The confidential includes bank account details, credit card numbers and passport data.
The programme also looks at the new phenomenon known as data farming' - the unauthorised "harvesting" of personal data to be sold on or exchanged for profit.
The investigation also reveals the scale of some of the call centre scams as one reporter is offered hundreds of thousands of "hot leads", full banking and financial profiles, to purchase.
In June, a worker at a Bangalore call centre of HSBC Holdings was arrested after funds were taken from British bank customers. According to reports, £230,000 was taken in the fraud, which was caught by internal security.
And in June last year, a tabloid said one of its reporters had bought bank details of 1,000 UK customers for £3 each from an Indian call centre worker.
Citibank, ABN Amro, Standard Chartered and HSBC are among financial giants that employ Indian workers to serve global customers.
Industry officials say workers are frisked and banned from bringing in mobile phones, pens and paper, cameras and even music players to prevent them from sneaking out valuable information.
They also undergo background checks, sign non-disclosure agreements and attend courses on customer secrecy.

President Clinton on Fox News
President Clinton aggresively defends his governments efforts on Bin Laden and terrorism after being accused by Chris Wallace of Fox news of sleeping on the job.
Keith Olbermann of MSNBC a pro Clinton commentator has led the democratic charge in lambasting the Bush administration, Fox news and Rupert Murdoch on terrorizing the average american of impending threats whenever elections are around the corner. Clinton's arguments are crisp and clear and Wallace seems to be like the deer in the headlights. Would be interesting to see how Oriely wouldve fared if he asked the same question to Mr Clinton.

PlusMo Mobile and Yahoo Plugins
Willow, Plusmo and Cricinfo have a free service to mobile-cast live cricket commentary of one day matches, tests and Twenty20 matches. The service works on any mobile phone by installing a client on the phone, which talks to the backend servers to refresh the live commentary ball to ball. One can set alerts for interesting events like fours, sixes, fall of wickets and most importantly"last 10 overs" where most of the one day action is centered. Now you can track your favorite team ball to ball, wherever you go. I believe they have a video version coming up too. You can download the client from

No Watson, No Johnson and still India cannot cross 200.. The Indians just cannot get their act together. I think there are serious differences in the team on the team composition. The body language doesnt seem right. Its about time the Indian cricketers stop selling sodas, restaurants and focus on the game. This series is a harbinger of things to come in the Champions trophy and World cup.

Shakira and the desi moves at VMA2006
Shakira , originally of Columbian descent is enamoured with Bollywood and Indian classical music. Farah Khan choregraphed her Indian dance moves for the VMA 2006 award ceremony at NYC. Apparently Shakira is learning Indian classical music a teacher in Chicago. She's now familiar with some Indian actors like SRK and the following quote from Farah Khan sums on what to expect in the next year, "She has seen my 'Chaiyyan chaiyyan' song from 'Dil Se'. She keeps pointing to Shah Rukh in the song and exclaims, 'know that guy.' I told her he's the Tom Cruise of India. I've promised her I'd put her on top of a train when I do a music video with her."

A tale of two Billionaires
A recent article in BusinessWeek Google doing good in India talks about the visit of Google.org foundation directors Larry Brilliant and Larry Page to Madurai's Aravind eye hospital. As I was reading the article I remembered reading an interview with Mittal Steel chairman and the 5th richest man in the world, Lakshmi Mittal where he said "he was too young to do charity". Mr Mittal worth 23B is 56 years old, Larry Page worth 12B is 33. It is indeed tragic that we as Indians are a densensitized society. We need couple of Americans to remind us of the task ahead - there are 300M+ people who live below the poverty line who need basic living conditions. Not to pick on Mr Mittal, the Infosys founder Mr Murthy doesn't like to discuss his involvement with charity. One less mansion in London or Paris wouldnt matter as much to Mr Mittal, as much as two meals a day to the millions of children who go hungry. I guess the newly minted Billionaries from India need to realise that, the real value of being a Billionaire is in sharing it with the millions who actually need it. Statistically billionaries give 1% to charity and if the likes of Mr Mittal give only that much, they will be fondly remembered by all millions of people they touch, instead of a bunch of Wall St analysts and shareholders.

India /WI world cup 1983 final
It was truly memorable victory and even after 23 years its still fresh in my memory. What are India's chances in 2006.. Hmm I think if Dravid and Dhoni get hundreds in the crucial games and our bowlers restrict the Aussies/SL to under 250, India can win WC 2006. Until then enjoy this. Paris Hilton - Stars are blind - banned in India
Yahoo news reports
Paris Hilton is too hot for Indian censors.
The country's Central Board of Film Certification has issued an "Adult" certification for her new music video "Stars Are Blind," which means it cannot be broadcast on any
channel. Now this will generate a lot of buzz for the song which has some nice reggae beats. First blogs, then TV channels, the Indian censors seem to be working overtime on making India a police state

Vande Mataram and the Pakistani National Anthem
Vande Mataram anti-Islamic, says Bukhari
ALLAHABAD: The national song Vande Mataram is "against Islamic beliefs" and asking Muslims to sing it would amount to "suppression" of the community, Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari said on Sunday.
Times of India story
It is ironic Pakistan, which is a Muslim state allows its citizens to sing its national anthem, whereas Mr Bukhari a citizen of India has issues with Indian muslims singing the Indian national song. At best this is a another attempt to mix politics and religion for political gains. The Bangladesh National anthem 'Amar Sonar Bangla', also salutes the mother and believe it or not was written by Rabindernath Tagore. If Bukhari is right, then Bangladesh needs to change its anthem too and maybe other countries too who show respect to their mothers.
Vande Mataram - The Indian national song
The Pakistani National anthem.
Th Bangladeshi National anthem
The Pakistani anthem from the Canadian embassy website is listed below.
English Translation
Blessed be sacred land,
Happy be bounteous relam,
Symbol of high resolve,
Land of Pakistan.
Blessed be thou citadel of faith.
The Order of this Scared Land
Is the might of the brotherhood of the people.
May the nation, the country, and the State
Shine in glory everlasting.
Blessed be the goal of our ambition.
This flag of the Cresent and the Star
Leads the way to progress and perfection,
Interpreter of our past,
glory of our present,
Inspiration of our future,
Symbol of Almighty's protection.
The Bangladesh national anthem by Tagore
My Bengal of gold, I love you
Forever your skies, your air set my heart in tune as if it were a flute,
In Spring, Oh mother mine, the fragrance from your mango-groves makes me wild with joy-
Ah, what a thrill!
In Autumn, Oh mother mine,
in the full-blossomed paddy fields,
I have seen spread all over - sweet smiles!
Ah, what a beauty, what shades, what an affection
and what a tenderness!
What a quilt have you spread at the feet of banyan trees and along the banks of rivers!
Oh mother mine, words from your lips are like Nectar to my ears!
Ah, what a thrill!
If sadness, Oh mother mine, casts a gloom on your face,
my eyes are filled with tears!

Ball tampering - Eng awarded 4th test
England awarded the match after Pakistan refused to return to the field after the tea interval. This was in protest against the ball tampering charge made by the umpires Darry Hair(Aus) and Billy Doctrove(WI), who challenged the ball during the 56th over of the English 2nd innings. 5 runs were awarded for ball tampering and the ball changed. This is the first time in cricket history that match officials have decided the result. Pakistan were in a very strong position with England down 4/298, still trailing by 33 runs and 1 day and the post tea interval still remaining. Why did Inzy refuse to take the field ?

Rediff scratching Infosys back ??
Frequent readers of rediff.com are getting tired of the websites coverage of Infosys, the Indian outsourcing company. Some even calling it a landscaping company (grass cutting) for the lack of development of any intellectual property or products. Ray Lane , the ex-Oracle CEO said :In the US we innovate, in India we renovate. I think Infy has done a great job in becoming a low-cast renovation contractor. Full kudos to Narayan Murthy and Nandan Nilekani for that. Inspite of their 90's label as a Bodyshopper, vehemently denied by NRN, Infy has done a great job in building infrastructure, skills of its employees and ofcourse great shareholder value.
I site-googled rediff.com to find out how many pages come up with the term Infosys. The revelation is startling. Many articles seem to be written by the same writer. Also we hardly find any articles on TCS which is the largest outsourcing company in India, Wipro and others. The reader is astute enough to decide if Rediff is pimping Infosys or its just a casual coincidence or there is more than what meets the eye ($$$ perhaps ??)

Rahul Bajaj - only the rich who understand the poor
Karan Thapar(the Devil's Advocate) of CNN-IBN did an interview with Rahul Bajaj, the notable industralist Rajya Sabha MP and they got into a petty fight about the defintion of politics, his net worth 419 crores (sic) and the fact that the rich actually understand the poor more than the poor itself. Rahul Bajaj inspite of going to Harvard hasn't learnt anything in life. He's a rich spoilt brat who will now represent the country's farmers as they drown in debt and commit sucides (no pun intended).
Here are some of his quotable quotes.
Karan Thapar: But do you accept that today you are in politics?
Rahul Bajaj: Of course not.
Karan Thapar: Why not?
Rahul Bajaj: What makes you say that I am in politics?
Karan Thapar: Because you are an MP.
Rahul Bajaj: So?
Karan Thapar: MPs are in politics. Parliament is politics.
Rahul Bajaj: That is what you say. Is there a law anywhere? Can you show it to me?
...
Karan Thapar:If it is relevant I will tell you. I went to Doon School, Cambridge, Oxford and I know a lot about politics.
Rahul Bajaj: I went to Cathedral, St. Stephens, and Harvard, slightly better than you in every respect. So I understand logic. But I am a humble man unlike you.
...
Karan Thapar: Do you know what they say? They say the mighty Rahul Bajaj, who is so proud of himself, has become a political pawn in the hands of Sharad Pawar.
Rahul Bajaj: I am a stooge.
Karan Thapar: Yes. I wasn’t going to use such a cruel word but you used the word.
...
Karan Thapar: Mr Bajaj now that you are an MP, explain to me how a man who is worth some Rs 420 crore can believe that he is the right representative for the people of Maharashtra?
Rahul Bajaj: I don’t like this word Rs 420 crore. The figure is Rs 419 crore and including my wife it is Rs 473 crore. My children and brothers are not included.
Karan Thapar: Alright not Rs 420 crore. You are associating all sorts of mischief with the word Rs 419 crore.
Rahul Bajaj: Rs 419 crore is a much better word.
...
Karan Thapar: How do you understand the poverty, the farmer suicides and about the children dying of malnutrition, which afflict this state?
Rahul Bajaj: If you think only the poor understand the poor and only the rich understand the rich and only a politician understands a politician and only a journalist like you understands a journalist, you are far away from truth. It’s only the rich who understand the poor and also an occasional genuine honest poor will understand the poor.
Karan Thapar: Only the rich understand the poor?
Rahul Bajaj: I didn’t say only. I said the rich and also the poor, but not the slogan-mongering politician who want votes. So it is irrelevant if I am rich or poor.
...
Karan Thapar: 89 per cent of the farmers in Maharashtra are in debt. Their quantum of debt has increased by 232 per cent since 1991. As a result in the last one-year 550 suicides have taken place in just one district, Vidharba.
Rahul Bajaj: Very wrong question again.
Karan Thapar: But an important one.
Rahul Bajaj: Just say the farmers are in trouble in Maharashtra and Andhra and some other places and I know that.
Karan Thapar: But I am talking of debt in particular because can a man who is worth Rs 419 crore understand what it is like to be in debt to the point at which you take your life. Can you understand that?
Sreekantp's Excellent analysis is also a must read.
With politicians like these, God bless India.

Dinesh Karthik 403* creates history
On July 20th 2006, Wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik created history by smashing a quadruple hundred in the SPIC-TNCA first-division league. He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's 401, which is quite an achievement for a young talented cricketer.
Karthik struck an astounding 55 fours and seven sixes in his 357-ball knock for Jolly Rovers against Alwarpet. "I've always wanted to make a big one," said Karthik, who was India's reserve wicketkeeper during the Test leg of the West Indies tour. More in the article from The Hindu

Blogger censored by Indian ISP's
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Email : presidentofindia@rb.nic.in
Dear Mr President,
As Indian blog readers have noticed, access to popular blogging sites like Blogspot has been blocked by Indian ISP's like Reliance, SIFY, MTNL etc. No explanation has been given for this action which is a blatant disregard for public opinion and freedom of speech.
Censorship of the media smacks of the days of the emergency in 1975. Galileo, Copernicus and others have been censored in the past by ignorant governements.
Lets not make India the laughing stock of the world. I'm sure better sense will prevail and this senseless censorship removed.
With warm regards,
A concerned Indian citizen.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron - Mahabharat clipx
One of the funniest movies ever made, the mahabhart episode is a mustsee. Metaphorically in the Blogger blocking saga, the Govt Of India can be considered to be Dhitrastra and the ISP's Duryodhana. Ofcourse the Pandavas are the Bloggers themselves :)
