Jayasuriya (122) took advantage of some woeful bowling, with Sajid Mahmood conceding 80 off seven overs, to help the tourists make 319-8 at The Oval. It was their highest total ever against England and although Kevin Pietersen (73) and Paul Collingwood (56) battled, they were out for 273 off 46.4 overs.

And they seized control by reducing England to 66-4, Kevin Pietersen among the early casualties, brilliantly caught by Mahela Jayawardene.
